Semperdata™ grew out of experience recovering data from old or failed PACS systems, where the information necessary to reconstruct the original data is scattered in stored image files, PACS databases, configuration files and executable code. The only standard means of patient data retrieval was a DICOM Query/Retrieve interface (and sometimes not even that), and even when the legacy system was running, it may not be able to deliver its data at a speed and level of reliability sufficient for migration to a new storage system.

And migration is indeed inevitable, because patient data must persist for a time greater than the lifetimes of the systems that create it or store it. Vendors advertising "your last migration" as a feature of their archives are in fact just promising to perform the outbound migration at no charge when you move to another system. But, events of recent years have underscored that not even the largest and most trusted companies can be safely assumed to be in the business and meet their commitments or your needs far into the future.

To seize control of your data destiny, you need to have your vital patient data in standard or documented form on industry-standard storage media supported by multiple vendors.

Whereas conventional DICOM archives provide DICOM access services but store data internally in proprietary formats. Thus, while they may store their data in industry-standard file storage systems, the stored data is of no use without the archive software that wrote it. This proprietary binding, shown in Figure 1a, serves the interests of the vendors but not of the customers.

In contrast, the Semperdata™ SDA stores data in DICOM Standard media storage formats on industry-standard file storage systems, as shown in Figure 1b. The SDA makes efficient use of storage systems ranging from local drives to NAS devices to SAN-based enterprise file storage systems. The DICOM Standard storage format protects the customer from dependence on proprietary software for long-term access to stored data.
